What is HEIC?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is a modern image format developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and adopted by Apple as the default image format for iOS devices starting with iOS 11. HEIC files use the HEVC (H.265) video codec for image compression, providing significantly better compression than JPEG while maintaining high image quality.
Advantages of HEIC Format
- Better Compression: HEIC files are typically 50% smaller than JPEG files while maintaining the same or better image quality.
- Higher Quality: HEIC supports 16-bit color depth compared to JPEG's 8-bit, resulting in more accurate color representation.
- Multiple Images: HEIC can store multiple images in a single file, making it ideal for Live Photos and image sequences.
- Transparency Support: HEIC supports alpha channels for transparency, similar to PNG format.
- Metadata: HEIC files can store extensive metadata including EXIF data, location information, and more.
Compatibility Issues
While HEIC offers many advantages, it's not universally supported. Many older devices, operating systems, and applications cannot open HEIC files directly. This is why converting HEIC to more widely supported formats like JPG or PNG is often necessary.
HEIC vs JPEG
The main difference between HEIC and JPEG is the compression algorithm. HEIC uses a more advanced compression method that results in smaller file sizes with better quality. However, JPEG remains the most widely supported format across all platforms and devices.
